ooids,Siliceous

Siliceous oolite, Gatesburg Fm., Cambrian.

The two thin sections look different from one another. I think that Slide 1 (the slide with the white paint on it) is cut from the sample we have, whereas the other slide might be from a similar looking sample or formation, but it is not cut from this sample.

GRD00VTT0: Slide 1: Silicified oolite. 30% of the ooids have rounded metamorphic quartz in the cores. Ooids are replaced with silica. Matrix is crystalline quartz. White paint with label on the corner of the slide. (C. Eichler)

GRD00VTT1: Slide 2: Different than slide 1. These silcified ooids are larger, not as coarsely crystalline, and contain fewer quartz crystals. Many of the cores are coarsely crystalline quartz. Silicified oolite. (C. Eichler)
