See Lizarraga et al., 2024 for detailed methods. This record reflects the leech cocoons produced in captivity at Cabrillo Marine Aquarium and donated to SIO-BIC at the conclusion of the study. Parent leeches were collected from round stingrays (Urobatis halleri) collected by set line in Mugu Lagoon, Point Mugu Naval Air Station (Oxnard, CA) in accordance with a permit issued to R. Appy by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (S-200810003-20163-001 and amendments). After approximately 1 month, sandy substrate was collected from the tanks, and kept at 4-18 °C, until sorted. Healthy appearing cocoons were placed into filtered seawater and kept in an incubator at 18 °C. Vouchered cocoons were maintained at 4 °C and donated to SIO-BIC in July 2023.
