Originally databased as Chione mesodesma I & G.; likely unaccepted combination of Venus mesodesma Quoy & Gaimard, 1835, accepted as Tawera spissa (Deshayes, 1835) with type locality in New Zealand, not to be confused with Venus mesodesma Quoy & Gaimard, 1835, sensu E. A. Smith, 1885, accepted as Tawera philomela (E. A. Smith, 1885) from south Atlantic.
