WF2 site details provided here are more precise than those in McClain et al. 2019. Experimental wood falls were deployed in May 2017. Eleven tree species were used including Carya illioniensis (4), Celtis laevigata (4), Magnolia grandiflora (4), Pinus echinata (4), P. elliottii (4), Quercus alba (4), Q. rubra (3), Q. virginiana (3), Salix nigra (4), Taxodium distichum (3), and Ulmus americana (3). Trees were fresh cut and logs dried to a moisture of ~15%. Logs were sewn into a synthetic fiber mesh bag to enable subsequent collection of highly degraded wood falls (5 mm mesh, ensuring larval settlement was not hindered). At each site, wood falls were dispersed ~5m apart. Twenty wood falls were collected in February of 2019 after 21 months and the remaining 20 in February of 2020 after 31 months. Wood falls were immediately preserved in 80% ETOH and all macroinvertebrates subsequently removed and identified.
