Verbatim date: 1979. Small paper label: Allan Hancock Foundation, University of Southern California, Nautilus macromphalus. 100 m. Off New Caledonia. 1979. Peter J. Ward. Caught in trap. Details requested by Bill Newman from collector Peter Ward (University of Washington) in a letter dated November 20, 1998: "These are all N. macromphalus and I am now confident I got all of them from you...I see from a 1978 paper of yours with A. Martin you numbered your specimens sequentially during the year captured; NC75-17, NC75-18, etc. The NC is presumably for New Caledonia and I note in Stenzel that was the known distribution of macromphalus back in 1964. So it seems likely your "79" specimens were also from New Caledonia...I would very much appreciate your advice on this matter." Ward and Martin, 1978, J. Exp. Zoology, 205: (pp. 5-12): "Nautilus macromphalus were captured in New Caledonia in cubical wood and wire traps about 1 m on a side, baited with fresh fish or crab, and attached by line to a surface buoy. Traps were placed outside the barrier reef in water 50 to 100 m deep for one to three days. Scuba was used to capture six animals in shallow depths at night.
